Think Mac OS X's Spotlight could use some help, especially when searching for text files? Download EasyFind, an alternative to (or supplement of) Spotlight and find files, folders, or contents in any file without indexing. EasyFind is especially useful for those tired of slow or impossible indexing, outdated or corrupted indices, or those just looking for features missing in the Finder or Spotlight.
- Boolean operators, wildcards, phrases
- Extended Boolean operators, similar to DEVONthink and DEVONagent
- Immediate searches, no indexing required
- Finds invisible files and files inside packages (something Spotlight doesn't do)
- Displays the location of each file in a separate column
- Previews files using Quick Look (Mac OS X 10.5 or later)
- Provides contextual menus and services
- Supports drag-and-drop
- Very responsive, thanks to multithreading
- Uses very little memory
- Improved support for OS X Mountain Lion and OS X Mavericks.
- Various bug fixes.

The best search utility - EasyFind searches everywhere, even the areas Spotlight is programed to ignore or forgets. Often Aplications will store information in the system folder. Some examples are background calalog apps, screensavers or preference files. If you need to delete or modifly them spotlight is useless. Another useful EasyFind feature is that EF can just search a specific folder if you already have an idea of where the file or folder you're looking for is located. Simple, fast and efficient EasyFind gets ★★★★★ from me.
Was the best search tool hands down until APFS (Apple File System) in macOS High Sierra…now useless - This was by far the best search tool for the Mac of any option, far superior to Spotlight because it performed the search live rather than relying on a catalog file that might be out of date, and because it made it easy to find hidden or system files. Unfortunately, APFS (Apple File System) that came with mac OS High Sierra is not compatible with this software, making it beyond slow and essentially unusable. If you visit the developer’s web site, you’ll see in the support pages and comments that they’re not all that concerned with updating a free piece of software. I can understand their position, but I’d be happy to pay for it if I could to have it work again. For those of you considering the software and have an APFS-formatted drive, don’t bother.

Saves me so much time - I have been using EasyFind since 2012 when I started a new job with a company that was Mac based and was new to digital filing. The files were disorganized chaos with no naming rules and files were everywhere and not consistently named. Also at that time trying to use the Apple search feature was miserable. I have saved so much time with EasyFind by pointing it at a folder in Finder and letting it search. It brings me every file, tells me where it is located and lets me open the file or the containing folder, and more. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I echo other’s sentiments - 10 stars!
$$$$ I bet at least 300 of us would pay $5-10 each for a fabulous face-lift and clearer options…. - SUPERIOR. I can’t believe Apple hasn’t stolen this and integrated it into the system…or paid for it to do that… I BET I SPEAK FOR HUNDREDS AND HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE WHO WOULD GLADLY PAY $5 FOR A BIG FACELIST AND IMPROVED OPTIONS. Lots of little things improved could cause this to win an Editor’s Choice Award I’m sure… There are many small, frustrating things…even though this is SUPERIOR to anything else…with a facelift and tweaks, it’s a revolution!!! WILL YOU PLEASE???
You are doing great things for the world. - Whoever you are DEVONTechnologies, you’ve made a fantastic app, and the fact that you’ve decided to give it away makes you a truly excellent human being (or set of humans, if there are more than one of you). This is better than any paid app. Try this app, then say nice things about this app.
Excellent, core tool - Originally got this to double-check spotlight as I knew some results were not compete. Sure enough Squirrel found everything Spotlight did and more, confirming incomplete results and did it in a tenth of the time. Invaluable just for that, but have now turned to using it when I need to find anything and everything. If they update the app and start charging $10, I wont complain. It is fast, accurate, thorough and flexible. If they do update it, they should call it Squirrel, in fact, I renamed it in my app folder so I could find it easier, KWL
Extremely Useful - One of the best utilities you can “buy.” If you frequenly need to find files that Spotlight cannot, and don’t want to be bothered to learn the bejillion esoteric options to the find command line tool, this app is just for you.
