Word Counter sits above your text editor or word processor and shows you the total number of words, characters, sentences, lines and paragraphs in a document.

Word Counter offer three distinct count views:
· Word count only - For those only interested in the word count and no other details.
· Detailed count - Includes word, character, sentence, line and paragraph counts.
· Target - By entering your target word count you can monitor progress via the count of remaining words, a progress bar and % complete indicator.

To save having to look the word count, Word Counter also has the option to speak the current word count.

If a target word count has been set, there is the option to have the remaining word count spoken to you. There are also options to notified by speech, a default alert sound or a sound that you choose when you have reached or exceeded the target word count.

Word Counter supports the following file formats TXT, RTF, DOC, DOCX, ODT, HTML and WORDML, so you can use any application that supports these formats, such as TextEdit, OpenOffice and Microsoft Word, to name but a few.

Every time you save the document the word count is refreshed so you can keep an eye on that target count.

If you don’t want the Word Counter window cluttering your desktop, you can always minimize it and still keep track of the word count by using the dock icon badge or by using the speech options.

Update fix does the trick! - This is a hard working and sharp development team, committed to fixing bugs as they are spotted, as well as extending the options within the original software, by user request. I'm very satisfied with their latest version which worked out the kinks that needed ilia's excellent massaging of the product. *************************************** The developers are incredibly responsive! The previous version did everything I wanted it to do, minus one feature -- audio alert upon reaching word count goal. After explaining the rationale and what I hoped for, I was amazed by the quick email reply from the folks at Ilia. The follow-through was outstanding. The new improved version includes more than expected. Great team! Great software! Thank you, Ilia!

Watch the instructional video - I don't usually write reviews but it annoys me when people write incorrect reviews because they haven't learned how to use a program correctly. This app does work while you have the document open and are typing -- it updates the word count every you save the document. You do have to drag and drop the file into Word Counter when you start, but then it tracks nicely while you work. Click on Word Counter Support link above and then go to the Word Counter support page. There is a video there you can watch to see this in action. I've been using it with Word 2011. I especially like that I can set a target amount and the progress bar shows me how many words I have to go. I would love it if it would simply track the active document window, rather than have to drag and drop at the start, but that's a minor annoyance.

The BEST when writing in TextEdit or anything that has no built-in word counter - Once I watched the video and learned exactly how to use this app, I had to have it. It's simple as anything, lightweight in size, inexpensive, and thank goodness, it will run under Snow Leopard 10.6.8. Just so you know, the order of use is: 1. Open Word Counter 2. Drag and drop your document onto either the pop-up or the dock icon, which will give a starting word count. 3. Double-click the actual document to open it for editing. 4. "Save" when you want to update the word count. It's fun watching the numbers go up. Easy! This app will do several other things, too (click the little dots on the bottom of the pop-up, and look in the Preferences), but that's the most basic and useful. And do watch the 3-minute video from Ilia Support if you're at all unsure. They've posted it on Vimeo and it can be downloaded for future reference.

Excellent mimimalist extension for TextEdit drafts - Very excellent minimalist app to allow counting words when you are writing drafts in the pre-installed TextEdit app. That's all I wanted, and it does more. Now, why TextEdit doesn't have a simple word counter in it, that is a question for the boys in Cupertino I suppose. If Woz were still there, it would have a word counter in it, I'm guessing. Even this review typer thing has a characters remaining counter on it. You know?

You have to leave the app you are working on! - I bought this app but am very disappointed because it requires you to drag the file onto the counter rather than giving you a count as you are writing. So you have to close the app you are writing in and then find that file and drag the file icon onto the Word Counter! Might as well just paste it into MS Word and use that counter. I need it to give me a dynamic word count, no matter what app I'm working in, and not have to leave my app to get that count! Or am I missing something?

Useful for six sentence stories - Glad I found this app, not for the word count, but for the sentence count. I like writing six sentence stories, and this little gem saves me the trouble of manually counting the sentences as I type. I use the same file each time, so I don't have to drop a new file each time I write a new sentence sentence story. Byword automatically saves when you pause typing, which keeps Word Count constantly updated. Thanks for this app.
