Best TurboTax ever - I prefer to use TurboTax at home rather than the software as service version as I have significant capital loss carry forward etc plus I like the privacy from having historical information stored here. This year’s version was the best designed interview yet. I particularly liked the downloading of brokerage transactons. This saved a lot of pain and entry errors. This was my first year using estimated taxes. The estimated tax (ET) interviews appear to be self-employed person oriented. I’m newly retired and was surprised that the ET interview did not ask about pensions, SS, and IRA/401K distributions. I finally figured it out using other income. But it would have been nice for the interview to include these common use cases. One notable change. The OS X version did not continually nag me to save my work. I assume it was taking advantage of OS X services to do this for me. Luckilly my only hang was the program beachballing in the print dialog during review. Annoying but no work was lost.

Better hope your payment goes through - This is pretty simple. I added all my info and got to the part where payment was due. Everything was smooth to this point. I went to pay but the app said my payment didn’t go through. Only problem was that I was actually charged. Well it’s nearly impossible to get a number to call for either Apple or Turbo Tax. So after emails and calling random numbers for each, I finally got in contact with someone that “knows what they are doing”. That resulted in Apple telling me it’s not their problem so contact Turbo Tax, and Turbo Tax telling me they won’t refund me becuase Apple takes the payment first. Turbo Tax was so gracious as to offer for me to download the desktop version though, of course at my expense. Pay double to file with Turbo Tax! Absolutely, where do I sign! So who knows what happens next. It’s been hours of going back and forth with no resolution in sight.

Updates!!! - After I paid, and all at the last moment when I was trying to e-file, it kept saying there were updates. I’d update, and it would ask again, and again, and again! Remove app, delete files, rebooted, deleted file, reinstalled, then updated, still said I had updates, but was able to submit this time. Bad software makes me sad.

Easy to use but annoying updates, and price increase from last year - The overall preparation is relatively smooth with this software. However 1) the new “freemium” model actually increased the price from last year. I bought a box copy from Bestbuy last year for just $59.99 for both federal and state. The in-app-purchase this year charged me $84.99. $25 price increase for just ONE return...That’s a heck of an increase in just one year. I think buying the hard copy boxed software is probably a much better deal. I won’t be downloading the software from app store for sure next year. 2) Towards the end when the software is trying to efile and validating the return, there were errors that claimed the software must be updated before the transmission could go through. I followed the instruction and updated the software, but it encountered the same problem. Finally I simply quit the app and restarted it, and this time the transmission went through. Had I not done that, the app will simply continue to give me the same error message over and over again. Turbox tax should really fix this bug.

Do NOT buy if you don’t need State tax - There is no option to purchase TurboTax Basic. Off to get the download for Basic for half the price.

**! Buyer beware !** - The usual good performance. However, outrageous prices once you're done, in particular if you plan on filing multiple returns and/or multiple states. Seems to me Intuit could structure that a lot more fairly. Currently, it's a shake-down and not competitive with Turbotax prices outside of the App Store.
