Description:

SatTrackerBasic is designed for real-world prediction of satellite ground tracks. It is highly accurate and, with fresh sets of orbital elements downloaded from within the application, it will keep that accuracy indefinitely. It provides ground tracks for multiple satellites, like some other applications, but unlike any other, it will compute visibility for multiple ground stations.

As well as ground tracks, the application calculates daytime, twilight and nighttime regions as well as calculating when each satellite is illuminated so that it can be seen – assuming there’s no cloud. To help with this, SatTrackerBasic also displays global cloud cover on a daily or (in some cases) a three-hourly basis. The various items which can be plotted are completely configurable, and so is the representation. The map can be displayed in two map projections: a simple rectangular projection or as a pair of azimuthal projections centred on the North and South poles.

Powerful database functionality is built-in to allow the management of thousands of satellites and ground stations.

Features:
- plots satellite positions and ground tracks;
- Sun and Moon position (and moon phase) are plotted;
- maps show the day and night coverage on the Earth;
- the time can be adjusted freely forwards and backwards, and run in simulated future or past times;
- current cloud cover is optionally downloaded and displayed;
- the location of the South Atlantic Anomaly (which can affect satellite operations) is shown for a given satellite;
- ground station horizons are plotted, taking account of the real horizon obstructions, for both transmit and receive links;
- ground stations are grouped into related sets;
- plots are either on a rectangular grid or a pair of polar projections;

This application has actually been used in planning real satellite operations!

Unique and capable - I work in the space business and this app is awesome! I don’t agree at all with MacDaddy077 and don’t see what his problem is. He doesn’t explain it actually. This is the only app on the Mac which does what we need in the space business. All the satellites in the Celestrak database are there, even debris fragments, and are easy to manage. Lots of ground stations can be used at the same time if needed and are handled in a very professional and easy way. It even displays the South Atlantic Anomaly (where satellites can suffer glitches caused by radiation in the van Allen belts) and no other app does that! There are some missing features such as producing lists of upcoming passes, but the Time Control can help there, because it changes the time forwards or back so you can see where the satellite will be. I would normally have given this a 4 due to the (few) missing features, but I’m rating it 5 to counteract what I think is an unfair review here. This is the Basic version and the developer’s website mentions a SatTracker Pro which will hopefully provide these features. Even so: highly recommended!

Let - I've used most every satellite tracking program released in the past 30 years. This one clearly is the lamest. In fact if this was released 25 years ago I would still give it a one star rating. Not worth .99 cents let alone 13.00. This is something you'd expect to find on a 1990 shareware diskette.

Finally a satellite tracking program for the Mac! - Like the title says – Finally! It’s about time someone invests quality time in developing an application to track satellites for the Mac – the direct download of current ephemeris from CelesTrack is a bonus. I like the fact that you can select the backdrop for the map – nothing like having the ability to just get the data you need and move on or use the NASA Blue Marble background to spruce things up a bit. The ability to add custom stations is a great feature and makes it truly customizable. It would be nice to be able to plot out (x,y) the classical orbital elements (i.e. nodal period, LAAN, eccentricity and such) based on the historical ephemeris of a particular satellite, a readout of a sat-to-ground site distance (NRT), 3D view where the orbital planes and various phases the satellites reside within could be viewed, one last thing would be displaying the distances between one satellite to another. Adding those features, IMHO, would make it a ‘Pro’ application – though as it stands right now it is definitely magnitudes above a ‘Basic’ title.

Decent no frills tracker - I was a bit surprised by the harsh criticism I saw by some reviewers. This is certainly not a demonstration of a super high-tech, leading-edge application design. It is basic and fairly simple. Most importantly - it works. No high marks for innovation. Just a good app that does what its supposed to do. I’m glad I got it and would recommend it to others as long as they keep their expectations realistic.
