Description:

RiffSync stores, organizes, and plays in perfect sync your RiffTrax® files. It is designed to be used with audio-only commentary files you purchase from RiffTrax.com. RiffSync can sync with a movie played in either iTunes or DVD Player, even those purchased or rented from the iTunes store.

RiffSync can also do a few neat tricks. Like ducking, which reduces the volume of the movie whenever the Riff-masters are talking. Also, thanks to a built-in way to share sync settings, many times you won't have to do anything to get the sync just right.

** Not familiar with Movie Riffing?

If you were fortunate to have watched Mystery Science Theater 3000, then you already get the main idea. In that show, people (and robots, in fact) would sit in a theater and watch a movie, telling jokes all the way through. This is sometimes called "riffing" on a movie. As the viewer, you sit behind these guys and watch the movie but also hear their commentary.

Mystery Science Theater 3000 (aka MST3K) is no longer on the air, but many of the same folks behind the show have started the website RiffTrax.com. They record and sell audio files with this commentary, carefully timed to be played back along with the movie being riffed. You can then rent or buy the movie any way you want, and simply play this audio file back in sync.

Unfortunately this creates a problem. The audio commentary file needs to be played back in perfect synchronization with your movie. If they are off by even a fraction of a second, the comedic timing of the jokes will not be right.

This is where RiffSync comes in. RiffSync helps you keep the sync, even if you pause the movie for a bathroom break.

** Works with MP3 audio commentaries from other sources too, like the Basic Cable Commentary series by Adam Carolla.

Very helpful for the rifftrax fan - While I've always enjoyed rifftrax, I'm usually put off by the need to maintaining a proper sync between the riff audio and the movie. This sort of humor is best enjoyed with a group of friends, but more viewers means more interruptions, more pausing, and more desync. I want to enjoy the comedy without worrying about whether or not someone will need a bathroom break. So I bought this program on a whim and used it to play a Harry Potter rifftrax for a couple of friends. I rented the movie through iTunes and was delighted by the ease-of-use. Since then I've gone from buying three rifftrax *ever* to a 3-riff-a-week habit, all movies rented through iTunes. (Between the riff and the iTunes rental, I'm usually out $5-6 per movie and I don't have to leave the couch to get my fix.) The process works like this: - Buy the riff and download it - Open riffsync - Click the "add riff" button and navigate to the riff's mp3 file - Riffsync anaylzes the contents of the mp3 file and tries to identify the movie At this point one of two things happens: 1. Movie found! The movie poster and syncing information is loaded from the server. Prepare for an effortless and flawless sync. 2. Movie not found! This has happened with about half the riffs I've bought. At this point the program guesses as best it can. Load up the movie, go to the first disembodia sync point, and tweak the sync using simple tools. Once your sync is perfect, go back to the beginning of the movie and enjoy. While the second scenario gets a bit "hands-on", I've had no problem setting up a perfect sync within minutes. I then submit my sync info back to the server, and usually by the next day my sync data has become "official", with the accompanying movie poster, etc. This program scratches a very specific itch, but it does so perfectly, and the iTunes integration is flawless. Highly recommended.
