Pauses is a small application that runs in the background while you work and helps you take regular pauses from working on your computer.

Research has proven that sitting for too long can be bad for your health; taking regular breaks facilitates the blood flow in your body and helps relieve stress as well as mental and physical fatigue. Pauses can help you build good habits by prompting you to take pauses and, if you so decide, by forcing you to take them.

Pauses is designed to be as non-intrusive or as intrusive as you want it to be. Want it to force you to take a pause? It can do that (useful for those of us who always press that tempting "Skip" button...). Want it to let you skip pauses freely? It can do that too.

• Pauses When You Want Them : Quickly enable or disable Pauses, start a pause at any time from the menu bar or the Dock, and reschedule and skip pauses at will.

• Forced Pauses : Need a little motivation to take regular pauses? Pauses is here to help. Set a maximum number of allowed pause skips per day or disable pause skipping and/or rescheduling altogether. Your call.

• Notifications : Make sure you aren't taken by surprise by using Pauses' notifications. By default, Pauses notifies you 30 seconds before a pause starts so that you have time to finish what you are doing. Notifications are displayed using Growl.

• Notes : Pauses can help you remember what you were doing before your pause so that you can regain maximum focus as quickly as possible when your pause ends. No need to think about your work while you take your pause. Out of sight, out of mind.

• Automatic Rescheduling : With Pauses' automatic rescheduling, you will never be prompted to take a pause when you've already been away from your computer for a while. Pauses intelligently reschedules your next pause when it notices you've been away.

• App-Based Pause Postponing : You will never need to disable Pauses to be left alone when you watch a movie or want to work uninterrupted in a specific app. Pauses can automatically postpone your next pause when specific apps are frontmost. Choose which!

• iTunes Control : Pauses is able to pause iTunes or have it play a playlist of your choice for the duration of your pause. For example, you can listen to upbeat music while working and let Pauses take over playing zen music when the time comes to take your pause.

• A Little Inspiration : Pauses displays inspiring quotes in its pause screen. What better way to free your mind and relax than by taking it somewhere else?

• Menu Bar or Dock (or Both) : Your menu bar is already cluttered with dozens of apps? You can tell Pauses to reside in the Dock only. Want to de-clutter your Dock instead? You can have Pauses reside in the menu bar only. Or why not both at the same time?

I try to offer first-class support by replying as quickly as possible to bug reports, feature requests and feedback; almost always within the same day and often minutes after I receive an e-mail.

Brilliant - This is a brilliant app. It has a beautiful, clear interface. It has all the features I can imagine wanting. It works without your having to think about it. You configure it for the interval you prefer. You can set it to start up at login so it's running all the time. It detects when you are working on the computer and when you are not. It starts the timer when you start doing something on the computer and when time is up iputs up a full window screen telling you it's break time. You can easily click on "skip" if you don't want to be interrupted. Or quickly specify a delay. If you don't skip, it starts a timer for your break, also configurable. If you start doing something at the computer and the timer starts and then you stop working before your time is up, it detects that and will set back to full time next time you start up again. I'm not sure how long you have to be stopped for it to detect you're no longer working, but it seems to work well in that regard. You can also specify apps that, if they are in the foreground, the timer will not be running. E.g. iTunes. (So, I can put on my Spanish lessons or music and putter around the house and no timing is happening.) It's all very easy to use. I am impressed how good and perfect it is. The only problem is … I can't believe how quickly a 20 minute interval passes. It shows how fast time goes by when you are at the computer.

Best Break App for Mac - I have tried several break apps for Mac and none compare to Pauses. The clean UI and easy to use settings provide the perfect app for reminding me to get up from sitting at my computer at work. Definately a must have to those that need a little reminder to get up.

Has it been abandonned? - This app is excellent but definitely needs updating and none for a while. I wonder if the developer completely forgot about its existence. We need an update please!

Great concept, elegant execution - Pauses is great because it actually forces you to take a break, but takes over the screen so elegantly that you almost don’t mind. For someone like me who never wants to stop working, this is ideal. I am finding that the frequent breaks give my eyes and mind the rest they need, and actually result in better productivity over the long run. The app can be used Pomodoro-style or tweaked to your specific needs. Definitely worth the price.

Of all the options... - It does not give you an option to disable the break screen!
