Very good software! - If you need to add a Table of Contents to a PDF document you could not ask for a better piece of software to help get the job done. I was struggling to create a detailed TOC for a 1,500 page PDF. Once I found PDF Outliner, I had the job done in about 3 hours. I am impressed because: 1. It is very stable. No bugs or glitches in dealing with a very large file. 2. It is very easy to use. I breezed through the 8 page manual in just a few minutes and was off and running. I was actually off and running without reading the manual, but I was more effective once I took the time to actually understand the feature set. This is NOT complicated to use. Very intuitive. 3. Lots of nice subtle features that help make the job easier. Like big red page numbers on each page for quick reference (can be toggled off) and keyboard short cuts if you want to use them. This is a great app that does one thing extremely well. So glad I found it.

Crashed - Lost 2 days of TOC Work! Big Files won’t work. - So I spent two days writing a table of Contents for a very large PDF file. When I went to do a final save it just got stuck for an hour, then crashed, again and again. I lost everything. Doesn’t this program autosave TOC entries as you go? That’s basic, folks. This program is advertised as working with large file sizes. What is the file size limit? They don’t say. To break this large file down into more managable sizes I could use their other product, PDF EXPLODE, but when you try to do that PDF EXPLODE requires that the pdfs FIRST have a Table of Contents. Developers, do you SEE what a catch-22 this is? HORRIBLY CONCEIVED SOFTWARE. AVOID any of these programs until they get these serious shortcomings resolved. Oh, and they still haven’t responded to my questions via customer “support”.

Excellent App - It works exactly as advertised and does it quickly. The only other PDF apps I've been able to find that can create a ToC have been complete editing solutions with prices starting around $60 and quickly going up. It was not immediately clear how to set up page numbers, and this was not explained in the guide, but after emailing the author I got a reply the next morning with a link to a video tutorial showing how this feature works, and it works well - like the rest of the app. Highly recommended.

Replaces OCR Layer with Rubbish - I was very happy to find this program, which purported to do exactly what I need. Truth be told, the program UI and functionality are good. I was able to create a TOC for three different books in no time at all. Unfortunately, I realized later that, when this app saves the final PDF, it corrupts the invisible OCR layer, thus making the PDF useless. This is my experience with PDFs that were OCR’ed by Adobe Acrobat Pro XI using ClearScan, but perhaps others have had a different experience using PDFs generated a different way.

Works great on El Capitan - PDFOutliner works great on El Capitan even though version 1.4 has not been updated since October 2012. PDFOutliner creates and edits the Table of Contents for PDFs. It does one thing and does it exceedlingly well! The splash screen help file is simple, direct and easy to understand. I was able to auto generate a 3-level TOC for a nine chapter, 200 page PDF in about five minutes after first opening PDFOutliner. The two automatic TOC generators, AutoTOC and MiniTOC, create separate TOC which are easy to hand edit, tweek, or merge. The manual drag-n-drop "Push Text” and "Solo Editing” features are equally intuitive. Thus far I’ve created the TOC for a dozen or so PDFs between 200 and 500 pages each without encountering any errors or crashs. Install the 7-day trial version from the developer’s website for a free test drive. I did and promptly bought the paid version after completing my first TOC.

This is a good program - If you are looking to make TOCs for your pdfs (which I was), this program is PERFECT. The auto-TOC feature works great. I have no complaints, which is rare since I usually have something to gripe about when it comes for apps. For $5, this is a good deal. And much easier and quicker than Acrobat Pro, which I have as well.
