Moneydance is a complete personal financial management application that includes features such as online banking, online bill payment, investment management, budget tracking, scheduled transactions, check printing, detailed graphs, reports and much more.
∞ HOME PAGE
This is an overview of your finances. The information shown includes account balances, upcoming and overdue transactions and reminders, and exchange rate information. Clicking on an account or choosing an account from the drop-down account list will take you to the register for that account, where you can enter transactions or reconcile the account against a statement. Clicking on a transaction reminder will display a window where you can automatically record the transaction.
∞ ONLINE BANKING
Moneydance can automatically download transactions and send payments online from hundreds of financial institutions. It learns how to categorize and clean up downloaded transactions. Send online payments, for banks that support them, directly from scheduled transaction notifications. View the full list of supported direct-download banks at http://moneydance.com/fi Please note that some banks charge a monthly fee for download and bill payment services.
∞ ACCOUNT REGISTERS
The account register is used to enter, edit, and delete transactions in an account. It is visually similar to a paper checkbook register, but the calculation of balances and sorting of transactions is all done automatically. The payee auto-complete feature makes it easier to enter and categorize your transactions.
Follow your investments and bring your portfolio into focus with support for stocks, bonds, CDs, mutual funds, and more. View the total value of your investment accounts or the performance of individual stocks and mutual funds over time. Stock splits and cost basis computations are a snap, and current prices can be downloaded automatically.
You can set up a payment schedule for single or recurring transactions so you'll never miss a payment.
Use the graphing tool to generate visual reports of your income and expenses. Set the graph type, the date range, and any specific settings for the type of graph you desire. Pop-up balloons display more information about the data being graphed as you move the mouse pointer over different regions of the screen. Graphs can also be printed or saved to PNG image files.
Set spending targets for categories per month, week or any other interval. View your up-to-the-minute budget status right in the toolbar, on the home page or in detailed graphs and reports. Use the highly acclaimed "envelope method" to specify expenses for each period and your to-the-minute status is shown with over-budget items highlighted. Moneydance will help you set a target and stick to it!
Enable file syncing to share or collaborate on a data file across multiple computers. Whether sharing with your partner or accountant, syncing your data will provide secure efficient access to your accounts from any computer.
∞ NATURAL LANGUAGE TRANSACTION ENTRY
Start typing a transaction description into the search field and Moneydance will intelligently fill in the details based on natural language date parsing and your history. For example, typing "1.23 sta" will display a transaction entry panel with the name Starbucks, category "Coffee", today’s date under the last account to have a transaction for Starbucks. The description, category and account are filled in based on your history.
Attach images, PDFs, and other such files to transactions by dragging the file into the register. Clicking an attachment thumbnail will open it in an appropriate application.
When you're on the go, you can use the Moneydance mobile app to enter or edit transactions and view balances. Changes are synced instantly and securely with your desktop. Available for free in the app store for your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.
This update includes visual improvements and bug fixes, including faster performance and more reliable conversion of sync settings and other data from older versions of Moneydance. In addition to the minor improvements, we've also got a host of big changes over Moneydance 2015!
As usual Moneydance has fantastic support for online banking & bill payment, credit card & bank account management, budgeting, investing, mobile app syncing and more. Moneydance 2017 brings big improvements including the following highlights:
- Sync your files seamlessly and efficiently across computers and mobile devices using our fully encrypted incremental syncing engine. Moneydance can now use any shared folder (such as Dropbox) to quickly sync your financial data conflict-free, using end-to-end encryption to maintain your privacy.
- Style! Choose from multiple beautiful colour schemes or create your own to customise the look of Moneydance. Want a dark mode, natural colours, or extra high contrast? Use one of the built-in themes or customise them to match your decor with just a few clicks.
- Python! Moneydance now has integrated support for Python scripts that you can use to manipulate your data and perform custom calculations or actions. Use our built-in script editor to run simple scripts on your data, or build your own extensions to Moneydance. Python is a widely used, high-level programming language that is powerful enough for experts but also easy enough for programming novices.
- A major (but not new) feature is our absolute defense of your privacy. All of your data stays on your computer, encrypted and completely under your control. If you enable syncing then your data is communicated over a medium that you choose (either Dropbox, or a shared folder of your choice). All synced data is fully end-to-end encrypted, which means that even Dropbox (or your chosen shared file service) cannot decrypt and access the data. Unlike most other financial software, Moneydance never uploads your online banking password to anyone but your bank. If online banking privacy and security is a concern, we’ve stated our policies and consider the privacy of your financial data an enormous responsibility.
Moneydance 2017 also includes many more small improvements and bug fixes that will make managing your finances not just easier but fun! An exhaustive list of those changes are included on our blog.
Most Helpful Reviews
Excellent Quicken Replacement - I converted from PC to Mac about a year ago and have been using Moneydance since then. It is an excellent replacement for the PC version of Quicken (the Mac version is horrible and very basic). I use Moneydance to track 6 checking/savings acts, 7 credit cards, and about a dozen investment accounts and have had no problems. It is easy to use and has great functionality. There is also an app for the iPhone that allows you to enter simple transactions on the go if you sync via Dropbox. It was very easy to set up the app and it is very convenient. I highly recommend Moneydance.
Not happy - I have used Quicken for many years and have been using 2007 since it was released. I was hoping Moneydance would have met my needs. It works fine as a checkbook. I had a great deal of trouble with my investments. My wife and I have the same mutual fund in our separate IRA accounts and Moneydance adds all the share together and then reports the total in both accounts. Since I have a similar situation in my 401k accounts, the totals were all incorrect. I tried renaming mutual funds to fool money dance, but ultimately I gave up. Online support will answer an inquiry with a question a week later, then after that question I never received a response. I wish I had been able to use a trial version first instead of paying $50 for Moneydance. I gave up and trashed it.

A far better alternative to Quicken for Mac Users - I used Quicken for many years until I achieved Windows sobriety and went to Mac 10 years ago. Moneydance has proven to be a very worthwhile replacement, and does not change the program every couple of years simply to get more revenue. I’ve bought it once and not one of the many updates has required me to learn how to use it all over again. I only wish they made a QuickBooks replacement.
Generally good, but a couple glaring shortcomings - I have been using this program for about 2.5 years. It has helped me immensely. My finances are much better, and my spending habits have improved. I now run version 17.1 (17.2 was just released yesterday). - I like that it updates my investments regularly. However, after downloading the new stock prices, it doesn’t seem to update the side bar (summary of your finances, including investments) until you close the program and reopen it. - It can download your bank transactions. My bank charges a fee for this, so I enter all transactions manually. This is probably a benefit since I see all of my transactions again and am encouraged to spend less. - It can generate a lot of different types of reports. I have used these to track my spending over time. - Generally, the support has been responsive and helpful. Lately, not so much (see below). The Bad: - There is still no "envelope method" for budgeting. Moneydance promised this would be included around 2014, but the feature is still not there! A workaround method does exist, but it’s convoluted and messy. I would much prefer the “envelope budget” feature over the new skins they just released. - I’m losing faith in the integrity of the reporting. I have discovered that some reports will give a different answer than others, even for the same query. Someone else discovered and reported one of the errors over two years ago, but it’s still not fixed. I have submitted tickets about multiple issues to the support site regarding the problems, but they have only sent generic auto-replies. The iPhone app generally works fine too, but it only allows you to enter/view transactions. I would like the ability to view my budget or even my investments. All in all, it does pretty well. As long as you know about the shortcomings, you can work around them. However, until you discover and understand the shortcomings, it can be extremely frustrating.
User friendly and accurate - When I switched from PC to Mac, I discovered that Quicken for Mac would not import data from the PC version, so went looking for the best bookkeeping program I could find - and that was Moneydance. Updates are free and seamless. It was pretty easy to set up accounts and to connect them to the internet for downloading and verification. The only problem I have, and one that keeps me from rating this program great, is that it won’t connect to Bank of America.
Very Affordable for the Time and Trouble it Saves Me - Look, this app does a great job of managing all my financial needs. Sure, there are bugs, but they are not show stoppers. I would like to see more visual options for graphing reports. I enter all transactions manually because it forces me to pay attention to the details of my spending. Reconciliation work perfectly. The budgeting features are easy to use. I don’t feel very connected to the developers, however. It would be nice if support was more responsive to their customer’s requests for help. For the money, this is an excellent choice for personal money management.
Outstanding app: Mega-featured, Mini-Priced - Moneydance is an amazing app. The user interface is far better than Quicken or Banktivity, very clean, very intuitive. The built-in reports are comprehensive, flexible, attractive and communicate instantly. The app is super stable compared to Banktivity and the after-sale service, while limited to email, is very fast, very helpful and puts both Quicken and Banktivity to shame. If you’re looking for a banking program with the ability to direct-connect to your bank(s) and credit card issuer(s), Moneydance is it. One small issue: syncing to other devices through Dropbox using the free apps for smartphones can cause problems, introducing a lag when saving each new transaction that can make the main program darn near unusuable. Disabling sync solves the problem but also makes the smartphone apps nonfunctional. In my opinion, the Moneydance main program is easily worth the money and is head and shoulders above anything else available for Macs today; the free smartphone apps are nice but not necessary. I can wait for Moneydance’s developers to sort out the sync problem; if you can too, then Moneydance is an unbeatable value.
