Disappointed… :( - Disclaimer: This is a rather lengthy, negative review because I want others to be well informed of my extent to get this to work before I decided to write this. The description for this app was everything I was looking for. A fully working version of hangouts independent from Chrome. At first launch, after initial setup, I proceeded to test the app by sending an IM to a buddy of mine. Selected my buddy from my contacts list and a blank window popped up…waited about a minute thinking maybe it needed to load something being that it was my first launch after install. Nothing happened, so I quit the app and relaunched and tried again…same result. From there, I tried a reboot to see if maybe that would solve the issue. No luck with that either so I preceded down my troubleshooting list: uninstall>reboot>reinstall>launch…unfortunately, no success with that either. Now I’m furious. I launch the App Store and proceed to the app page to leave a nasty review just to be told that I’m unable to leave reviews in the App Store because I was running a beta version of macOS 10.12.4. That must be the reason! Seeing that I still have a few apps to test on the beta, I decided to let it be and just use the hangouts web app for the time being. A few weeks pass by and I’m all done with my testing so I decide to reformat and install the latest macOS Sierra release, which was 10.12.2, fresh (not something I would normally do just for any software, but I use Hangouts so much, I just wanted it to work because in my opinion, Chrome is too memory intensive to leave running in the background just for a messenger application. …about 2 hours later, clean install is complete. First thing I do is launch the app store and install this app. I run the app and Eureka! Was so thrilled I decided to give the developer more of my pennies for the secret extra features (I say secret because there was no description of these features at all, but the developer provided me with what I’ve been wanting so I thought heck, what’s another 99¢). Turns out, the extra features are for 2 additional hangout themes which in my opinion are rather hideous. Whatever, I'm only in for $2.99 + $0.99 + tax. Satisfied with the app, I decide to put off reinstalling everything else and catch some shut eye before my morning meeting with partners scheduled for 9:30am on, you guessed it, Hangouts! I wake up, around 8am and prepare my notes for the meeting. At 9am, I boot up my computer and launch hangouts. I see people are already logged into the meeting so I decide to hop in early as well. BLANK WINDOWS AGAIN! Once again, I'm furious (keep in mind I just did a clean install and aside from the native apps, nothing else is installed on my machine and the only thing I’ve done was shut down for a few hours and then boot up again). I get that apps can be buggy from time to time, but when you put a price on it, it should work flawlessly, if not, the app should be free. I'm equally as upset with Apple as I am with the developer for this App. Apple puts developers through too much to get their apps in the store to allow garbage like this on there. This is not acceptable, and even though it's only a few dollars lost, it's essentially robbery. This is equivalent to purchasing merchandise from the back of a van then getting home and finding out you have a box of bricks. Anyways, if you made it this far, thank you for reading. I hope this is helpful to any potential buyers for this. I will periodically keep checking this app to see if anything changes and will update my review if needed. I don’t know…maybe it’s just me, maybe it’s my hardware, or I’m just not doing it right. Doubt it, but open to suggestions.
Too many glitches - Messages sit in sending mode and are never received on the other end. I cannot open a recent conversation. Instead, I have to choose New Convesation and pick from my list. Even then, a chat window doesn’t always open. Have to close out of app and reopen. I have a freshly installed OS so it should work just fine. Not worth the $$.
Do not buy this - This isn’t even a real app. It just links you to a browser that asks you to install a plugin. If I wanted to use a browser plugin, I would have used a browser with a plugin. I don'g want a browser plugin, I want a working application that functions without the use of a browser window. I want my money back.
Application does not look like the picture - The application is very buggy. It will not load properly. I’ve tried over and over to make a call, and it will not work.
Has promise - Overall, this app is fulfilling my needs for a stand alone Hangouts experience independent of Chrome. There a couple of notable issues that prevent a better review. (1) Whenever I receive a new message, ALL message windows (even those with older conversations) pop up. I archived all messages, still happening. (2) I paid $0.99 for “exta settings” out of good faith to support app development, however, no where did it explain what those extra settings actually were. Not worth the extra money, in my opinion. (3) Unread badge doesn’t appear to be working for me. (4) Notification in notification center doesn’t distinguish conversations. All are labeled “Messenger” with no discrimination between senders.
