Description:

Horror Vacui is a two-player abstract strategy board game based on the antiquated notion that nature abhors a vacuum.

Two players, Water and Earth, take turns placing pieces on the board. The temperature of each piece affects adjacent pieces. The player with the most normal temperature pieces when the board is full wins!

HELPFUL TACTICS

- Keep your opponent on their toes with Hot and Cold pieces.
- Try to Normalize as many of your own pieces as possible.
- No good moves? Sacrifice a Hot or Cold piece to Normalize another.
- Watch out for the devastating Inferno and Ice Age Extinction Level Events!

NEW IN HORROR VACUI 2

- Same engaging strategy
- New dexterity-based reels and familar luck of the draw cards
- Two board sizes for longer or shorter play times
- All new 8-bit isometric graphics
- Unique temperature and element animations
- Expanded and remixed 8-bit music plus all new sound effects

Indie game doesn't disappoint! - As a child of the 80s, I hold a special place in my heart for pixels and chiptunes. Shaun delivers both in a clever reimagining of Reversi. The addition of hot and cold to the pieces, as well as the ability to sacrifice a piece to change the temperature of an existing piece (rather than placing it on the board) adds layer of depth that feels great. Oh, and woe betide you and your opponent if either of you draws an extinction level event! I will definitely be playing this one again and whether you were raised on NES or PS3, you should check it out too.

Love 8-bit graphics and music, but playability suffers - I appreciate any 8-bit efforts (especially by an indy developer), but this game suffers from a few flaws: 1) the music is not great, even for 8-bit standards, 2) the symbols used in the pieces are a bit confusing, 3) the rules for the game take some getting used to, 4) so far replay value is very low (mostly due to 1-3). I hope some more time is spent on improving this app, and I hope the developer takes this review as solid feedback and not discouragement.

Great game, needs one more preference - Great game, great graphics, great nostalgia value. The 8-bit music contributes a lot to the nostalgia, and it clearly exemplifies the strength of Shaun Inman's many diverse aptitudes. But it's really annoying when you're trying to play a strategy game. The gameplay music simply cannot be mentally tuned out unless you have superhuman daydreaming capabilities. It's great music but it's not appropriate for this type of game. I can of course mute the system volume, but I would like to hear the sound effects, and I might like my own music sometimes. I solemnly swear to return here and re-rate the app at five stars if a music on/off preference is added.

I love this game - I bought the first version of Horror Vacui when it first came out for the iPhone and iPod touch, and I've been enjoying and playing this clever puzzel game ever since. The Mac version is just as much fun. Highly recommended.

Crazy fun! - I can seriously visualize myself playing this for a really long time. The graphics are crazy awesome, the sounds are great and the actual game just really tests your brain to make the right plays. The extinction level event is crazy. I really like how simplicity can be so effective in a game like this. It's REALLY fun and I highly recommend it!

Spectacular - This game is excellent. You should buy it. But, I agree that volume controls would be a welcome addition. I understand on iOS this isn't really necessary, but on the Mac (and especially a game like this that can easily be played in a small window), the ability to lower or disable the music and/or sound effects while doing other things would be quite useful. Some sort of keyboard controls would be nice too. Aside from that, the game is beautiful and addictive.
