Nice interface, but buggy and missing features - I have to admit that the interface of Hamster Free Archiver is quite nice. It's one of the few I've seen on OS X that allows you to add files to an existing archive through a graphical interface, and it feels quite Mac-like. However, it's hindered by quite a few features that are buggy at best, or completely missing at worst. First of all, Hamster has rolled their own localization framework, rather than using the one built into Cocoa. The problem here is that it doesn't work consistently-- the app will often start up with its options labeled in Russian. The localization also seems slipshod in general; a couple Russian words have crept into the English translation, and several of the language names listed in the preferences window are entirely wrong. Second, despite the app using the 7Zip engine, which supports multiple archive formats, I cannot find any place to change the format that it saves in. The program can open 7Zip archives, but curiously does not appear to be able to create anything other than standard ZIP files. Finally, all documentation linked to both in the App Store and within the app itself refers to the Windows version, which has a completely different interface. I cannot find any documentation relevant to the Mac version whatsoever, or even any indication on Hamster's site that there *is* a Mac version. If these bugs and omissions can be fixed, however, this might take the place of other archiving apps on my Mac.

Works Great!!! - I don't know what everyone else is complaining about... zipped a file in a decent time frame (5.7GB) and compressed it down in size to 5.5GB. Completely fine by me. People need to stop complaining about free software, it may not work perfect for some people sometimes, but that's usually because it's still in development stages anyway. Thank you for this fine piece of software HamsterSoft LLC, keep up the good work!!!
