GIF Brewery is the best video to GIF creator on Mac OS X. GIF Brewery lets you convert clips from your video files to GIFs. There is no more need for extracting frames from your movies and fiddling with Adobe Photoshop (tm). Let GIF Brewery do all the hard work for you.

See GIF Brewery in action at http://gifbrewery.com/ and http://helloresolven.com/portfolio/gifbrewery/.

Features:

* Convert clips from your videos into small GIF files.
* Resize or crop the video for your GIF.
* Add multiple captions or overlay images to the GIF.
* Create GIFs with your desired FPS or manually set the frame count and frame delay.
* Change the looping direction, such as normal playback, reverse, or even palindrome!
* Change the number of loops for the created GIF.
* Apply Core Image filters like Sepia or Color Correction.
* Save your settings for later edits.
* Supports Mac OS X 10.6 - 10.10.
* Makes your hip on Tumblr, assuming your GIFs are smaller than 1MB.

Technical Notes:
* GIF Brewery will not alter the original file and settings just impact the GIF.
* GIF Brewery does *not* create GIFs from series of still images.
* GIF Brewery can only open and create clips from movies that Quicktime can open and play. Apple provides a list of the file formats and codecs at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3775.
* Note, however, that GIF Brewery cannot open any DRM-protected files.
* If you are using Quicktime components, such as Perian, Flip4Mac, or 3ivx, you MUST make sure they are up-to-date and compatible with Apple's Sandbox. Out-dated components will lead to GIF Brewery crashing.
If you are having an issue with any of the codecs listed above, please contact us! Note: If you experience any crashes whatsoever please contact Hello, Resolven at [email protected] We are unable to diagnose the issue without help from effected users.

Works great - I tried this with a 30 second 720HD commercial and it worked great. I then tried it with a 30 minute TV show and it worked great too! It wasn't until I checked "Automatically Calculate Count & Delay" and when I tried that, it crashed. Still, with all the features of being able to do watermarks, add text, mark IN and mark OUT (I love that hotkeys "I" and "O" worked without me even looking it up), this is a must buy for anyone wanting to make parts of a video into a GIF.

Occasionally buggy and missing some key features - I’ve been looking for a low memory utilizing, low maintenance GIF maker for a while and so far this seems to be the most simple, but it has a lot of glaringly obvious issues and missing features. - No zoom option (i.e. if I’m working with a video that’s a lot larger than my computer screen I’m forced to resize the video before the program is even usable.) - Often the app will render me GIFs with empty rows or columns, as in the crop tool will say it’s cutting the pic to 125x300 and instead I’ll get one that’s 124x300 or one that’s 125x300 but with an edge row that’s entirely white pixels - No aspect ratio option for easy cropping. I often make GIFs for forum avatars but if I want the image to be exactly a specific size I have to drag the handles on the image to precisely what I want or else it’ll be sized wrong - After I’ve fine-tuned the start/stop times for the GIF I want to make and created the GIF, I’ve found that the program will still often render a GIF that’s outside the constraints I’ve set. I’ll often end up with extra frames at the beginning. But with all this being said it’s still probably the most easy to use entry level GIF making app on the app store, at least that I’ve found.

App bombs + frame max exceeded breaks preview - The app cannot generate a GIF from a 26 second .MOV file. Therefore it cannot deliver end-user value. Application bombs OR - depending on the configuration - will fail to complete the task and trigger an error at the preview alert box. 1-Star because there is no 0 star.

Solid workflow, occasionally buggy - I use this app almost daily to make animated gifs from QuickTime screen recordings. It’s great for 15-second clips at up to 30fps, and helps me demostrate how to use my company’s web-based product to customers. If you need something to produce gifs in a hurry, this app works well. I don’t regret spending $5. Unfortunately GIF Brewery crashes if I ask too much of it — say, more than 15 seconds at 640×480 pixels and too large a color palette. Then I have to reopen the file and try again. I’ve also had trouble previewing gifs in El Capitan. Hopefully that’ll improve with the next update. On my wish list is the ability to find and remove redundant frames, and to have GIFs that pause on a given frame instead of just the end of the animation.

:-( - The quality of gifs it generates is extremely poor and the interface is laggy as all get out. Not worth it.

Disappointing video format support - As they say, GIF Brewery can’t open any video formats that aren’t supported by Quicktime. The Perian codec pack used to be a workaround, but it’s been abandoned for years and doesn’t work on later OS X builds. As a result, most of the times I’ve tried to use GIF Brewery it has been useless. If free media players like VLC can include support for these additional formats, why not GIF Brewery? Converting a huge file into quicktime just to make a GIF defeats the purpose of a quick specialized program such as this.
