Description:

Clips is a time machine for your clipboard - it remembers everything you copy/paste so you never lose a thing!

- Unintrusive system clipboard monitoring
When Clips is running you won't even notice it. Its advanced architecture allows it to sit in the background and silently add anything you copy.

- Application automatic clipboards
As you go about your daily business, Clips automatically generates and arranges copied items into Application-specfic clipboards. If that's not enough, you can create your own.

- Smart Clipboards
They're exactly what you'd think they are. Define a set of rules and these clipboards will automagically display all past and future matching clips.

- Live Search
Storing dozens or hundreds of clips? Just start typing in the Clips Board and irrelevant items will fly off the screen instantly.

- Abbreviations: on-the-fly text expansion
Assign Abbreviations to your clips and Clips will type/paste them automatically for you when you enter the abbreviation anywhere on your Mac. Use abbreviations for emails, signatures, code, or anything else you can think of.

- Shortcuts
Clips enables you to define shortcuts to paste the five most recent items. You can also define your own shortcuts to paste additional clips of your choosing.

- Drag and Drop
Want to store an email, a piece of text, a Web page for future reference? Just drop it onto the Clips panel!

Version 2.0

Version 2.0 is exactly what we needed - I've been a user of Clips since version 1.5, and for those of you keeping track at home, that version came out a couple years ago. Very little has changed in 2.0, and I'm grateful for that. The interface and ease of use make Clips the best clipboard manager I've tried, and they remain unchanged. What has changed is the performance and memory usage of the app itself. Clips 1.5 would easily take up 800MB of RAM within a few minutes of usage, and would cause the Finder to hang for 10-15 seconds every time you switched to it. Naturally, even with its great feature set, these shortcomings made it unusable. In Clips 2.0, those problems appear to be completely gone. Having 30 items in my clipboard history, and running it for several days without restarting, it's taking up a whopping 80MB of RAM and has not slowed down my machine at all. I bought it a couple years ago, and I would buy it again, knowing just how much it has improved. In the future, I hope they add an option to sort clips by date/time in the menu bar icon. Aside from that small request, I'm glad to be using it again.

Version 2.0.5

No help, no demo, and not self-explanatory - The app may be lovely but I can't tell because I haven't been able to figure out how to make it work. It saves my clipboard, all right, but clicking on clips or typing shortcuts does not result in them being pasted into anything. That could be due to a conceptual failure on my part but (1) there's no help within the app, (2) the FAQ on the vendor's support site is minimal and throws database errors(!), and (3) competing apps have heard of the 21st-century practice of posting nice screencasts to demo your features. Don't waste your time. Move on.

Needs [a lot of] work - Revising my rating, lowering from three stars to two stars, due to Clips' tendency to stop working after some time. Once I notice, I can quit and relaunch the app, but the developer has not been able to address this problem in the last six months. Looking for a lightweight replacement... Version 2.0.1, April 15 2011: Some things I like about the about the app: - The interface is gorgeous - Application exceptions, so -- for example -- your passwords aren't saved to your clipboard(s) for 1Password - Abbreviations: this could replace several popular "snippet typing" apps for some people Some things I don't like: - The Panel seems to be useless. Too few clips (10 on my display), previews too big, no scrolling - There's no help -- this is unforgivable - Limit of 100 automatically-copied clips - The Organizer is the most compact listing of your clips, but doesn't paste when a clip is double-clicked - Can't clear the Board filter except by backspacing (although you set it to be cleared when exiting) - The Board chaos described by several reviewers is accurate -- a simple list (as an option?) would work better for me Responding to previous reviews: - Removing the Dock icon is an option in the version @Magnuson reviewed - The forum is active and actively monitored by the developer, contrary to Penny Knapp's review - There IS a trial version available from the developer's site, although SkeetNYC didn't find it Still, I'm expecting great things to come!

incredibly useful - too bad for the fatal bug - The usefulness of this app cannot be understated - which makes the bugginess of it so unfortunate. I am consistently having the issue others are reporting. After a while (seems like 1-2 days of usage) Clips will no longer log new clips. Clips continues to run, board comes up, etc. but no new clips will be added. The application begins working normally again after restarting it. This is an obvious problem, as there is no indication as to when clips are no longer being saved. Really wish this would be addressed by the developer.

Well done - This app is well done. I like that it shows all auto saved clips and also breaks it down for what apps they're from, if you want that, too. It seems to do everything it does well and I like it. I have no use for the odd graphical layout options, but I like that it has keyboard shortcuts and a list instead. I do wish it would have a way for me to specify the location of the saved list so I could use Dropbox or iCloud to have it go across machines.

Version 2.0.5
Review by Gabriel Lanata

Great app but jumpy animation - UPDATE: Lowering my 4 star rating to a 2 star rating because of big bug: After just one day of using it, the hot corner has stopped working completely. Now when I try to open the "Board" by using the hot corner, I can see the animation coming in and then, suddlently, it reverses and dissapears. I can still access it through the keyboard shortcut, but the quick hot corner feature was important to me. Hope they fix it. ---------------- This is a great app with lots of feature and a great interface. One small thing that bothers me is that the "Board" opening animation is a little jumpy. It takes a tiny bit to load the clips in it, the time is not the problem, it is that while the animation is happening, it shows a large "No clips" message which quickly jumps to the real clips list. This makes the opening animation look very awkward. I know its not a serious issue, but it interrups a great app which should present the clips smootly and seamlessly without interrumpting your workflow, instead it makes it distracting and jumpy. I'm sure it is something that the develper can easily fix, although it worries me that this app has not been updated since february.
