Disappointed with my PURCHASE… A CHALLENGE TO USE... - I’ve been using VOILA for more than a year. I couldn’t upgrade to CAPTO because VOILA was frozen and I couldn’t get any information. So, for $29.95, I said, “What the Heck.” Well, what the heck… it’s like the developers don’t use this product… I can’t resize the canvas on the fly anymore. I can resize the image on the fly which I couldn’t do in VOILA, I can’t change the color of text by character, I can’t reposition text vertically, I can’t create vertical text … this is very limiting…. and if I had to do over, I would not have purchased…. at this point…. VOILA is more than adequate when compared to CAPTO… When I purchased I thought I would get a GREAT product, after all, they will improve on Viola which is a great product…NOT SO…. If I’m incorrect with the short comings listed above… then please correct me… I think VOILA is a better product… developers, you have some work to do on CAPTO…. so get to it... I will update as I get more information… The highlighter tool works if you flatten your text box and also work on an image... … . windows are pinned and you can’t move them… makes NO Sense…. …. the crashing issues that i have in VOLIA have not been resolved …. still crashes frequently…. the crashing occurs when I try to save an image… not sure if new or replace the image… not as frequent a viola crashed... FINALLY FIGURED OUT HOW TO UNROUND THE CORNERS ON A RECTANGLE… SLIDE THE SMALL RED DOT.. ONE DOWN AND MORE TO GO… UPDATE: I’ve used now for about 4 days. I didn’t upgrade but purchased CAPTO. With a prurchase I still have access to Viola.. not sure if this is the case with upgrade… There are some useful tools with CAPTO… the spotlight tool… some tools that were abailable in VIOLA are no longer available in CAPTO… I also use snagit… between SNAGIT, VIOLA and CAPTO, I can accomplish the task I need to… would be nice to be able to do so in a single application… but for $30 what the HECK…. If you lose access to VIOLA with an upgrade, I think I would purchase… some of the tools in viola are useful and I still use…I’m going to change the rating to 4 stars.. and would give a 5 star if some of the tools I complained about were added...

Poor user interface, no audio controls - The user interface is complex and gets in the way of simple tasks. Try recording a video from your screen using computer audio and computer video. There is no audio selection option. There is a grayed out video camera icon, but it may not respond when selected. Capto likes screen captures of still images, but why bother with this clunky software when a simple screen capture using Apple keystrokes will let you capture an image that can be imported directly into your favorite editor. The concept of a screen recorder app that does not have an audio interface control makes no sense. The App developers clearly never tested their product in the real world. Overall, Capto seems to be a failed attempt to update an older app, Voila, but the result is an awkward dysfunctional product that will waste way too much time trying to get it to function in what should be the bottom line purpose: record a computer screen video with simple controls to select window size and audio needs. Stay away from this turkey until the interface is improved and there is some proof that it actually works as described.

Review by a student and reviewer

Used to be good when voila - When this app was voila, it used to be good. It did one thing (screen still capture and annotation) extremely well. It was a great replacement for skitch after they were purchased (and ruined) by evernote. Now that it is capto, it tries to do too much, and none of it really well. Screen still capture is now extremely slow and clunky, even on modern hardware, and it is hard to quickly capture a still on screen and annotate. Video screen capture (which seems to be their concentration now) is nowhere close to as good as, say, camtasia. I’m now looking for a new replacement for the original skitch since capto is not it (although voila was).

Disappointed with my PURCHASE… A CHALLENGE TO USE... - UPDATE:7/24/17 : apparently the issue I had with the crashing and the “CAPTO has shut down” message was due to the size of the Library… not sure if you can create a new library through the interface… but i located the library in finder… opened the package contents and found 3 folders… Images, Video and database… removing the contents of the Images and Video folder and selecting the new Library (renamed through finder after making a copy) I haven’t had a crash in 2 days where I was have 10 or more a day. Would be nice if the developers could add the ability to manage the library through the user interface…. THIS IS GOOD SOFTWARE BASICALLY… THE VIDEO CAPTUER WORKS GREAT AS DOES THE IMAGE CAPTURE…HAS ENOUGH TOOLS TO GET THE JOB DONE... UPDATE 7/22/17 I had a thought after leaving the last update an hour ago… the image capture, and image manipulation software would CRASH OFTEN… CAPTO uses a LIBRARY … I went to the finder, located the library, right clicked and selected VIEW CONTENTS… the contents displayed 3 folders… IMAGES, VIDEO and DATABASE. In the Image folder there were 1,400 images. The Library was9.8gig. Since CAPTO uses a Library with a “database”, I thought maybe the issues was an INDEXING issues… so I tried to create a new LIBRARY from within the CAPTO user interface, but couldn’t figure out how to do so I used the finder and made a copy of the existing LIBRARY and renamed. I opened the library contents and moved all the images to trash as well as all of the video captures… I emptied trash… I then changed the location of the LIBRARY using CAPTO preferences, relaunched CAPTO….I had image holders but not images so I selected all of the IMAGE holders and delegted through CAPTO as well as the VIDEO… and had a blank LIBRARY… so I will test for a few days and see if the crashing is reduced or eliminated... UPDATED: I’VE been using CAPTO for more than a year… I used the video recording only infrequently but use the screen capture almost daily. Good Concept poorly implemented… CRASHES ALL THE TIME on my MAC MINI with 16 gig RAM and a i7 processor… Program shut down ALL the TIME and sadly NOTHING is done by developers to resolve… NOT worth the cost of the Product… I would look for something else first... Disappointed with my PURCHASE… A CHALLENGE TO USE... - Update: 7/30 Creating new Library and keeping small help but still CRASHES frequently… all you have to do is click Reopen and the application opens and the data appears to be intact…you can create a new Library from the User Interface (Preferences) If you have favorite images in the old library the only way to move or copy is from the finder… someone may know how to do, but I have figured out yet the process…the crashing isn’t a deal breaker.. an annoyance mostly... UPDATE: 7/24/17 CRASHED for the first time since I created the new Library… I have a total of 78 images in the Images folder of the Library. I had a blank document open 750 px by750 px and I was dragging another image from the icon row at the bottom of the user interface when the crash occurred… UPDATE:7/24/17 : apparently the issue I had with the crashing and the “CAPTO has shut down” message was due to the size of the Library… not sure if you can create a new library through the interface… but i located the library in finder… opened the package contents and found 3 folders… Images, Video and database… removing the contents of the Images and Video folder and selecting the new Library (renamed through finder after making a copy) I haven’t had a crash in 2 days where I was have 10 or more a day.
