This will be the last version of Bookle. With the inclusion of iBooks in the upcoming release of Mac OS X, Bookle will continue to work, but has no real future. This version acknowledges this and offers discounts on other products as a thank you for past support of Bookle.

Bookle is a simple, elegant EPUB book reader, designed from the ground up to let you read your EPUB-formatted books without getting in your way.

Bookle collects your books into its library, providing instantaneous single-click access to any title, and remembering where you left off in every book. Simple, efficient navigation controls (using the mouse, trackpad, or keyboard) let you read without distraction. You can switch between books in a single window, or open multiple windows to refer to several books simultaneously. Bookle can even read your books aloud to you.

Bookle is a collaborative effort of Adam Engst of TidBITS Publishing (publishers of the Take Control ebook series) and Peter Lewis of Stairways Software (creator of the file transfer tool Interarchy and current developer of the Keyboard Maestro macro utility). Bookle brings together Peter’s programming skills and Adam’s publishing and documentation experience, and it includes complete documentation in the form of a built-in ebook, “Take Control of Bookle.”

Since we cannot respond to comments here, please leave suggestions in our UserVoice forum at and ask us questions by using the Bookle Support link to the right. We respond to everything that we receive outside of the Mac App Store.

Bookle works under either Mac OS 10.7 Lion or 10.6 Snow Leopard.

Please note that Bookle cannot display encrypted or DRM-shackled books, or books in formats other than EPUB.

Release Notes:

This will be the last version of Bookle and includes offers of discounts on other products as a thank you for past support of Bookle.

This version also accepts ePub and other case variants of the extension in EPUB documents.

This is a very useful application - Initially, I bought this more to support TidBITS than due to a perceived crying need to better read EPubs on my Mac. I searched for all my EPubs and was surprised at the large number that I had. Now they are all in one place. But more importantly, many of the EPubs that I have are related to my Mac. There are, of course, several Take Control books, and also the highly recommended Mac Kung Fu. I can fumble around for my iPhone to pull these books up. Or, I can use Bookle, which is right where I need it--on the Mac. Bookle is also, surprisingly for me, a more pleasant read than opening a PDF version of a book. It is easy to flip through the pages, and scanning the Table of Contents for a desired topic is a snap.

Doesn't work - Some epubs work, but others don't. I just tried to open 2 pubs, both of which work in Calibre. One wouldn't open at all in Bookle, while another one gave the chapter headings but no text.
